What
is Open Adoption?
The
definition of Open Adoption is an adoption arrangement in which contact
between the adoptive and biological parents is allowed or maintained.
During
the process of Open Adoption, in most cases, the child’s birth
mother picks who she will place her child with. This is a very difficult
decision for the birth mother to make. This is who will raise, love,
and parent her child. This will be mommy and daddy. Through Open Adoption,
a birth mother has opportunity to stay in contact with the adoptive
parents she has chosen and be connected with her child. Sometimes through
visits, and other times simply through letters or email. Every situation
is different and unique. Often adoptive parents at first feel very threatened
by the concept of Open Adoption. They wonder if the child will be confused
by “two” mommies. An important thing to remember with Open
Adoption that it is shared Information, not shared roles. The adoptive
parent will be the one nurturing, training and filling the role of a
parent in the child’s life.
